Diet Tips for the Health of Your Dog’s Fur

Dog CoatDog owners know that a shiny, lustrous coat is a clear indicator of a dog’s health. Good nutrition is essential in maintaining the health of a dog’s skin and fur. Low cost poor quality grain based commercial dog foods may be a contributing factor to a pet’s poor health and lackluster coat.

Feeding a dog a nutritious, high-quality diet, will help a pet maintain a healthy, glossy coat. Dog foods rich in protein, vitamins, and fatty acids, with omega 3 and 6 oils, will enhance the natural shine of any dog’s fur. A well balanced premium dog food that is high in protein usually contains adequate amounts of nutritional supplements necessary for a healthy coat. In addition, protein rich foods like boiled eggs, cooked fish, chicken, and various meats can be added to dog food to improve the condition of a pet’s coat.

Pet owners may want to avoid corn based dog foods that trigger skin allergies and dull, dry fur in some animals. Premium dog foods, which are high in protein, include brands like Eukanuba, Orijen, Canidae, and Natural Balance. Most quality dog foods should contain enough nutrients to keep a dog’s coat shiny and healthy.

Depending on a pet’s size, adding a teaspoon to a tablespoon of fresh fish, safflower, or sunflower oil to dry food also will improve the luster and sheen of a dog’s coat.

Olive oil may also be added to a pet’s food for glossy fur. Pet owners can ensure their pet has a full, healthy coat by feeding them premium quality food and adding fatty oils to their diet.
